چکیده

In this work we numerically calculate the linewidth of a single–mode monolithic Semiconductor Ring Laser (SRL) operating in the unidirectional regime. A new expression for the SRL linewidth is derived from the conventional Henry’s formula, and the importance of different physical parameters is discussed. In particular, the linewidth is mainly determined by the SRL diameter, because the waveguide bending loss have a very strong dependence on the diameter. We show that circular SRLs with diameter smaller than 180 μm are unlikely to be operated CW. As a general rule, the linewidth decreases for increasing SRL diameter, and it varies from 15 MHz for 200 μm diameter down to 1 MHz for

Experimental analysis of the optical spectra of directionally bistable semiconductor ring lasers

The optical spectrum of monolithic Semiconductor Ring Lasers (SRLs) is measured simultaneously for both lasing directions with a grating-based OSA, in the regimes of bidirectional and unidirectional operation. In the unidirectional operation regime the SMSR is larger than 25 dB, and the directional extinction ratio (i.e., the ratio of the power emitted in the two opposite directions) is larger ...

Suppression of beating noise of narrow-linewidth erbium-doped fiber ring lasers by use of a semiconductor optical amplifier.

Beating noise in narrow-linewidth erbium-doped fiber ring lasers puts severe limitations on applications of the lasers. We demonstrate the suppression of beating noise in fiber ring lasers by using a semiconductor optical amplifier in the laser cavity, which acts as a high-pass filter. Two different ring structures are presented as examples to demonstrate this beating noise suppression.

Monolithically Integrated High-Q Rings for Narrow Linewidth Widely Tunable Lasers

We theoretically analyze the use of fully integrated highQ ring cavities (intrinsic Q ∼ 1 million) with widely tunable semiconductor lasers to realize narrow linewidth lasers. Different configurations are studied, including cases where the highQ cavity is external to the laser cavity and provides filtered optical feedback to the laser cavity and cases where the highQ cavity is an integral part ...

Using Narrow-Linewidth Lasers for Rapidly Tunable Microwave Signal Generators

Narrow-linewidth lasers are a key component of photonic microwave signal generators, as the width of the generated RF signal is equal to the beat note of used lasers. Heterogeneous silicon photonics platform opens up a possibility of improving the coherence of fully integrated photonic microwave generators by providing means to separate the photon resonator and absorbing active medium; improvin...

Low kappa, narrow bandwidth Si(3)N(4) Bragg gratings.

We investigate three approaches to low perturbation gratings to achieve lower linewidths in filters and semiconductor lasers. The three designs, which are labeled post, sampled, and high order, are DUV lithography compatible and were fabricated on 90 nm thick Si(3)N(4) strip waveguides. Reflection and transmission spectra measurements show coupling constant, kappa, values ranging from 0.23 cm(‑...
